Berol’s Petey’s Boy, “Pete”, was best known as “the large red cocker with lots of power and talent”. This proved to be true throughout his amazing trial career. Pete won the 1960 United States National Cocker Championship Field trial beating both English and American cockers and in that same year took 2nd place in the Canadian National Field Trial beating many Springers as well. The following year in 1961, Pete came to play again at the Canadian National Championship and took 3rd, again placing ahead of many other springers and cockers.
Pete had an incredible career that began actually at the late age of 6 years old. Mr. Clarence Wingate, a professional trainer, was a friend of Pete’s owners and saw the talent in Pete when he was very young. On hunting trips Clarence would continue to suggest that Pete could really do well in trials if “only he was trained”… Finally Dr. Menege agreed to let Clarence train Pete to see what he could do. At this point, Pete was six years old, was not steady and wouldn’t retrieve. After a short period of time, due to Pete’s responsiveness and willingness to be trained, Clarence began to bring him to fun trials to see where they were at in training. After 13 fun trial wins it was time to enter the Open Stakes. Pete demonstrated he was more than ready and proceeded to win the first two Open Stakes Clarence ran him in and was a Field Champion in two weeks’ time! (At the age of 7).
In Clarence’s words, “You couldn’t lose a trial with him!”
